A Guide to Caring for Your Wool Hats

A Guide to Caring for Your Wool Hats

Wool hats are not just a winter essential; they're a fashion statement that can elevate your entire outfit. Whether it's a classic beanie or a trendy fedora, hats add a touch of warmth and style to any ensemble.

As wool hats are often prone to smelling and getting dirty they can look worn out easily. So, to make sure your woollen headgear remains cosy and stylish season after season, proper care is essential, and really easy to do!

In this blog post, we'll walk you through some simple steps to keep your wool hats looking their best. Plus, we'll introduce you to a convenient dry clean spray for clothes that removes the hassle from your wool hat maintenance.

Step 1: Regular Cleaning

Dust, dirt, and sweat can accumulate over time, leading to a smelly and dirty-looking hat. To keep your hat looking fresh between more thorough cleanings gently shake your hat to remove loose dirt. Then, use a clothes brush or a lint roller to remove any remaining external dirt.

Step 2: Spot Cleaning

If you notice a stain or spill on your wool hat, treat it straight away! Blot the stain with a clean, damp cloth to lift as much of the stain as possible without rubbing, which can damage the wool fibres. If the stain persists, use our stain remover to remove it, and you can find more instructions on how to use our stain remover in our blog post here.

Step 3: Protect and Freshen Up

To refresh your wool hat without having to wash it, try our dry clean spray for clothes that are perfect for hat fabrics. The spray is specially formulated to refresh and clean delicate fabrics; the White Tea and Mint scent removes the odours, and the natural anti-bacterial removes lingering impurities. Simply spray directly onto your wool hat, and it will help maintain your hat's cleanliness and freshness between washes.

To remove any fabric bobbles, gently move a cashmere comb along the surface for depilling and to make your hat look less worn.

Step 4: Hand Washing

When your hat needs a really deep clean, then get hand washing! While other items of clothing are fine to put in through a normal washing machine cycle, to wash your hats a hand wash is essential. A hand wash helps you avoid the risk of the hat losing structure that can be caused by washing machine friction and pressure.

To hand wash your wool hat, start by filling a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of wool detergent. Our wool detergent is pH neutral to protect the delicate fibres and stunningly scented with the essential oils of Himalayan Cedarwood and Orange Oil.

Next, gently agitate the water to create suds. Submerge your hat, swish it around, and then let it soak for 15 to 30 minutes.

Rinse thoroughly with cool water until the detergent is completely removed. Avoid wringing or twisting the hat, as this can cause it to lose its shape.

Step 5: Drying

When it comes to drying your wool hat, never use direct heat or sunlight, as it can cause the wool to shrink or lose its colour. Instead, reshape your hat and lay it flat on a clean, dry towel to absorb excess moisture. Leave it to air dry in a cool, well-ventilated area.

Caring for your wool hats doesn't have to be a daunting task. By following these tips, your wool hats will not only keep you warm but also make a stylish statement for many seasons to come.
