How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs in Clothes

Bed bugs are the stuff of nightmares for most people, and after the outbreak in Paris over the last weeks, they’re currently on everybody’s mind.

These tiny, blood-sucking pests can turn a peaceful night's sleep into a living nightmare. While the focus is often on treating the infestation in your mattress and furniture, it's equally important to protect your clothes, as bed bugs can easily infest your wardrobe. In this blog post, we'll explore how to get rid of bed bugs and keep your clothes protected.

First step, how do you identify bed bugs?

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown insects that measure about 4-5 mm in length. They have flat, oval bodies and are often found in the corners around your bed. Signs of an infestation include small, itchy bites and tiny dark spots on your bedding.

For clothes you suspect to be infected, seal them in a plastic bag and leave them in the freezer for three to four days. You should also avoid moving infested items around your home to prevent spreading the infestation and store anything in plastic bags while you are waiting to wash or freeze them.

Clean: Bedbugs are often found in dirty places, so vacuum your mattress, furniture, carpet, and wardrobe thoroughly, especially in crevices and seams. Dispose of the vacuum bag or clean the canister outside to prevent the bugs from escaping.

Store Clothes Properly: Invest in airtight, zippered storage bags or containers for clothing that you don't frequently use. This prevents bed bugs from getting in or out. Leave a natural moth-repellent scent bag nearby to help deter the bed bugs coming near your garments.

Inspect Second-Hand Clothing: Be extra careful when purchasing second-hand clothing or furniture. You should always inspect items thoroughly before bringing them into your home, to help spot if they are carrying bed bugs.
