How to Make Mulled Wine | Inspired by our Treat Me Scent Bag

Here is the final instalment of our Christmas Creations series inspired by our Treat Me Scent Bag. Of course we could not share our favourite DIY Christmas crafts without sharing how to make a Mulled Wine. Simple and easy to make, and always a crowd pleaser, watch our video below to be inspired!

You will need:

  • 1 bottle of red wine (750 ml)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 8-10 whole cloves
  • 150g sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 whole nutmeg (optional, grated)
  • 1-2 star anise (optional)
  • A couple of shots of brandy (optional)
  • Orange zest for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:

    • Wash and slice the orange.
    • If using, grate a small amount of nutmeg.
    • Measure out the sugar, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and any optional ingredients.
  2. Combine Ingredients:

    • Pour the red wine into a large pot or saucepan.
    • Add the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and star anise (if using).
    • Stir in the sugar.
  3. Heat Gently:

    • Place the pot over low to medium heat. Be cautious not to boil the wine, as boiling can reduce the alcohol content and change the flavor.
    • Warm the wine slowly, allowing the flavors to meld. Stir occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
  4. Simmer:

    • Once the wine is warm, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for at least 15-20 minutes. This allows the spices to infuse into the wine.
  5. Add Brandy (Optional):

    • If you like a bit of extra kick, stir in the brandy just before serving. This step is optional.
  6. Strain and Serve:

    • Before serving, use a ladle to remove the cloves, cinnamon sticks, and any other whole spices. You can strain the mulled wine to ensure a smoother texture if desired.
  7. Garnish (Optional):

    • Pour the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses.
    • Garnish with a twist of orange zest if desired.
  8. Enjoy:

    • Serve the mulled wine warm and enjoy the cosy, spiced flavours.
    • Feel free to adjust the sugar and spice quantities to suit your taste preferences.
